Firemouth cichlid is a great choice for a beginner who started keeping freshwater fish and save a lot of trouble for the keeper. However keeping firemouth cichlid itself only would be boring and I’m sure most keeper thinking how to make the aquarium looks colorful. Here are the best 4 firemouth cichlid tank mates.

The firemouth cichlid are easily adapted to any water parameter and temperature. There nothing to worry off and you can focus on getting a great tank mates for them to mix with. Do not surround the firemouth cichlid with larger size and aggressive cichlid because the fish don’t feel confident. The fish may die by diseases which cause by stress.

The male firemouth suffer the most by stronger tank mate harassment but the female may look for protectors among other species of fish in the aquarium. I strongly disagree mixing the firemouth with aggressive and larger size cichlid even keeping them in the same aquarium for sometimes. Mixing with schooling fish are the best and the fish able to live happily and peacefully in the aquarium.

Here are the freshwater fish which you can consider of:

Rummy Nose Tetra

Rummy Nose Tetra

Rummy Nose Tetra

One of the best firemouth cichlid tank mates is this rummy nose tetra. It come with bright red spot on its head and come with white and black strips on the end of its body. The fish can grow to 4.5 cm long and they are peaceful fish which are one of the best candidate to tank up with firemouth cichlid.

The fish are schooling fish and keeping 8 of them together would be the best number. The fish prefer to live in soft and slightly acidic water (6.5 -7.0 pH) with the temperature of 23-28°C. The fish do not require bigger space but keeping them together with other fish, I would recommend keeping the fish in 20 gallon size of tank.

The fish are sensitive with high level of ammonia and nitrates which can cause the fish to fatal. Perform a 30% of water change every week to keep the water clean for the fish in the aquarium.

Serpae Tetra

Serpae tetra is beautiful small fish which look like a small moving flame in the tank. The body of the fish show orange red and there is a black spot on the fish opercle together with it dorsal fin. They are also a schooling fish with size of 4 cm long. The fish can live up to 4-5 years.

Set the water temperature in the aquarium around 22-24°C and maintain the pH level in between 6.0-7.0. The fish are habitant in clear water and provide a clean and clear water for the fish to live in the aquarium.

The behavior of the fish are aggressive and it will nip the fin of a slower swimmer and smaller fish. It is better mix them with bigger fish to prevent aggression of the fish towards smaller size fish. I would recommended keeping 20 of the fish in a 10 gallon size aquarium.

Glowlight Tetra

The name speak for this fish. The body of the fish come with nice glowing stripe. The fish can grow up to 5 cm and the life span of the fish normal live up to 3-4 years.

The fish live in brownish water and slight acidic water parameter in the nature. Make sure the water parameter in the aquarium are suitable for this glowlight tetra to live in. The fish prefer 6.0- 6.5 pH level and the water temperature of 22-28°C.

This is also another type of schooling fish which are suitable to firemouth tank mates. Keeping the fish in the number of 6-7 fishes in a 12 gallon aquarium. You can add more fishes into the firemouth cichlid aquarium to make the aquarium looks merrier but do not overcrowded the aquarium.

Neon Tetra

Neon Tetra

Neon Tetra

This is one of the famous tetra fish and also suitable be firemouth cichlid tank mates. The body of the fish come with blue neon stripe running from the nose to the length of the body. You can see a beautiful red stripe below the blue neon stripe.

The red stripe are runs only halfway of the body of the fish which are different with cardinal tetra. The fish will grow up to 4 cm and the fish will able to live up to 3-4 years with proper care. I would recommend keeping this schooling fish in the number of 6 -7 in a 20 gallon size of aquarium which can prevent overcrowded in the aquarium.

The fish are pretty similar with cardinal tetra and purchasing this fish, you need to make sure it’s really neon tetra. The fish prefer a pH level of 6.5 -7.0 with the water temperature of 21-27°C.

Conclusion

These are the 4 tank mates I personally recommend to add into the firemouth cichlid tank. Do not add angelfish or dwarf gourami into the aquarium because the fish are slow swim and the fish will show aggression towards the fish when the aquarium are overcrowded.
